Annual Report 2018

dpa Picture-Alliance GmbH succeeded in 2018, after a decline in the previous year, to significantly improve both sales and profit again and to achieve a net profit of 2.4 million euros. The first positive effects from the sales and technical realignment of the company played a role, and the one-off income from a relicensing and rising revenues from rights assertion also contributed significantly to the good result.

The photo agency Zentralbild GmbH was able to maintain the previous year's result almost exactly to the euro and closed the year again with a profit contribution of 0.1 million euros.

With a reported profit of 0.6 million euros, Global Media Services GmbH was not quite able to match the previous year's result of 0.7 million euros, as two years after the discontinuation of the sales cooperation with epa last year, the subsequent compensation payments have ended and could not be compensated for with other sales.

The graphics subsidiary dpa-infografik GmbH was able to keep both sales and costs constant in a still difficult and very cyclical market, so that the profit was once again 0.2 million euros.

dpa-infocom GmbH also succeeded in maintaining its total operating performance at a consistently high level of around 9.0 million euros, achieving an annual profit of 1.4 million euros, with unchanged costs.

The service companies dpa mediatechnology GmbH, Rufa Rundfunk-Agenturdienste GmbH and dpa English Services GmbH closed the financial year at about the same level as the previous year with a slight increase in business volume.

The dpa-AFX Wirtschaftsnachrichten GmbH, in which dpa holds a 76% stake, succeeded in slightly increasing its turnover by 4.7 million euros in the past year and in doing so also increased the profit compared to the previous year by 0.1 million euros to 0.6 million euros.

An equally pleasing development can be seen in the mecom MedienCommunikations-Gesellschaft mbH (dpa holds 50% stake), which not only exceeded its planned sales growth, but also increased its net income by 0.2 million euros to 0.8 million euros.

In the sixth year of its existence, dpa-digital services GmbH (50 % dpa stake) generated a slightly positive result for the second year in a row, but sales growth was below expectations and reflects an increasingly difficult market environment.

The two holdings in Switzerland, awp Finanznachrichten AG (50% dpa stake) and news aktuell (Schweiz) AG (now 70 % dpa participation, 30 % participation by news aktuell GmbH), developed differently in 2018.

While at awp, the changes observed in the Swiss financial sector were noticeable, the company nevertheless managed to close the year with sales growth and a slightly higher profit of 1.7 million Swiss francs.

At news aktuell (Schweiz) AG, in which dpa increased its share by 50 % in the past year and so now together with the German news aktuell holds 100% of the shares, sales could be maintained at approximately the previous year's level; however, due to one-off expenses for the realignment of the company’s personnel, net income for 2018 was temporarily reduced by 0.1 million Swiss francs.
